An original 3D design based on the StepWells from India.
Many years ago, I saw a picture of a stepwell in India. I remember thinking to myself. . . that would make an intriguing quilt. The picture was saved and life got in the way. But ever so often, I would look at the picture and think of how I could make the quilt, giving the illusion of depth and the 3rd dimension. . . .
Red Batiks, from light to dark, are arranged to give a sense of depth, projecting that the sun would be highlighting the upper portion, and as you descend into the well, the shadows would set in.
The “steps”, in shades of gray with dark gray risers and a cream face are arranged to give the 3rd dimension of the quilt and allow the viewer’s eyes to step down into the well as if they were going for some water.
The quilt is made from all Batiks, the backing is the same Batik as the step faces. The quilt is machine pieced; freehand machine quilted
